The Surprises We Don’t See Coming

A new week begins, and I’m starting it with a full heart.

Over the weekend, a Zesty reached out to share something that genuinely moved me. They’ve been following along with the 21Day Empathy Challenge especially Days 8, 9, and 10, where we explore listening without fixing, being with people, and letting others feel seen without stepping in to take over.

At first, they thought these practices were… well, obvious.

They told me they almost dismissed them as “nonsense” because they believed they already listened deeply every day.

But here’s the beautiful part.

As they reflected each evening, they began noticing something they had never seen in themselves before:

  • They were constantly stepping in to fix things.
  • Not out of ego.
  • Not out of impatience.
  • But out of habit — a deeply ingrained, automatic response to other people’s struggles.

They realised how many times they had to stop themselves from taking over conversations, offering solutions, or smoothing things out before the other person had even finished speaking.

They were shocked.

And grateful.

Because the challenge helped them see a pattern they didn’t know they were living inside.

And they reached out simply to say thank you.

Today, I’m grateful for that message — not because it praises the challenge, but because it shows the power of awareness.

Sometimes the most “obvious” practices are the ones we’ve been doing on autopilot for years… without ever noticing the impact.

So as we begin this new week, I want to ask you:

  • What has surprised you about the Empathy Challenge so far?
  • What have you noticed about yourself that you didn’t expect?

And if you’ve fallen behind or want to join in — it’s not too late.

Send us an email at info@zestagain.com  and we’ll catch you up.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

Stay curious.

Stay open.

And gently ask yourself today:

Do I spend my days trying to fix everything for others… without even realising it?

Sometimes the smallest awareness creates the biggest shift.

Reflection: The Quiet Skill That Shapes Safe, Sustainable Nursing

Last week I had time to work alongside nursing students as they unpacked their placement experiences — the moments that stretched them, surprised them, unsettled them, and taught them something new about who they are becoming as future nurses. The reason I do this is...

Easter Is Approaching: A Gentle Invitation to Pause?
