As this week begins, I want to share something personal — not as a boast, not as a “look at me,” but as a gentle example of what wellbeing looks like in practice.
I’m taking a few days off.
Not the kind of break where you cram in activities, rush from place to place, and return to work more exhausted than when you left.
Not the kind of holiday that becomes another performance of productivity. I’ve done those before, and they never deliver what they promise.
This time, I’m taking a break with one simple intention:
- To be quiet.
- To rest.
- To have days with no plans.
- To let myself be a little bored.
Because boredom, stillness, and unstructured time are not signs of laziness — they’re signs of recovery. They’re how the nervous system resets. They’re how the introverted part of my personality gets the nourishment it needs so the extroverted part of me can keep showing up with energy, clarity, and genuine care.
So, as you read this blog, know that I’m away from my life for a few days — doing nothing on my terms. No rushing. No squeezing things in. No “I’ll just finish one more task.” Just rest, space, and the kind of quiet that lets wellbeing catch up.
Why Breaks Matter More Than We Admit
We talk a lot about wellbeing in healthcare and education, but we often forget the simplest truth:
- Humans need breaks.
- Real ones.
- Regular ones.
Breaks that interrupt the cycle of soldiering on.
Breaks that stop the habit of eating lunch at the computer “to catch up.”
Breaks that remind us we are not machines.
When we skip rest, we don’t just lose energy — we lose perspective, creativity, emotional regulation, and the ability to care sustainably. Breaks are not a luxury; they’re a biological requirement.
A Gentle Check-In for You
As you move through your week, I invite you to pause and ask yourself:
Have you been taking enough breaks to nourish your wellbeing?
Are you giving yourself moments of quiet, boredom, or unstructured time?
Should you be planning some breaks today — even small ones?
Your wellbeing is not optional.
Your rest is not negotiable.
Your life deserves space, softness, and time to breathe.
I’m modelling that this week — not perfectly, but intentionally. And I hope it encourages you to claim the breaks you need, too.
Your life. Your terms.
Your wellbeing matters.
