Why Challenging Yourself Matters (And What a 10km Run Taught Me About It)

Every two months at ZestAgain, we launch a new 21day challenge. Not because people need more to do, but because a challenge is one of the simplest, most powerful ways to shift perspective. A challenge interrupts autopilot. It nudges you to look at your daytoday life with fresh eyes.

It asks:

  • What else might be possible?
  • What might change if I tried something different for just a few minutes a day?

Yesterday, I was reminded of this in a very real, very sweaty way.

I ran a 10km event at the Gold Coast Running Festival.

A proper, organised, bibonshirt, crowdscheering, what on earth am I doing here? kind of run.

And here’s the thing:

  • I had never done a 10km event before.
  • I didn’t know what to expect.
  • I didn’t know how the whole thing worked.
  • I didn’t even know the route.

My only goal was simple: see if I could do it.

Stepping Into the Unknown

There’s a moment at the start line of any challenge—whether it’s a run, a new habit, or a 21day practicewhere doubt gets loud.

  • What if I can’t?
  • What if I’m too slow?
  • What if everyone else knows what they’re doing except me?

But that’s the magic of a challenge.

It doesn’t require you to be ready.

It just asks you to begin.

Once the race started, something shifted. I wasn’t thinking about the whole 10km anymore. I was thinking about the next few steps. The next corner. The next breath. The next moment of “just keep going.”

And that’s exactly how our 21day challenges work.

Not big, dramatic overhauls.

Just small, doable actions that build confidence and momentum.

What the Run Taught Me

By the time I crossed the finish line, I realised something important:

  • The value of a challenge isn’t in the outcome—it’s in who you become while you’re trying.

You learn:

  • that you can do hard things
  • that uncertainty isn’t a stop sign
  • that progress often feels like tiny steps, not giant leaps
  • that courage is built through action, not waiting for confidence

And you get a new perspective on your own life:

  • If I can do this… what else might be possible?

Why This Matters for Individuals and Teams

This is why ZestAgain keeps offering new 21day challenges.

Because individuals grow when they stretch themselves—and teams grow when individuals do.

A challenge:

  • breaks routine
  • sparks curiosity
  • builds shared momentum
  • creates a sense of “we’re in this together”
  • helps people see themselves (and each other) differently

Just like my 10km run, it’s not about perfection.

It’s about showing up, trying something new, and discovering what you’re capable of.

Your Next Challenge

Whether it’s a run, a new habit, or a 21day practice, choose something that nudges you out of the familiar. Not to prove anything to anyone elsebut to remind yourself that growth is always possible.

And who knows?

You might surprise yourself, just like I did.

A new week begins, and I’m starting it with a full heart. Over the weekend, a Zesty reached out to share something that genuinely moved me. They’ve been following along with the 21‑Day Empathy Challenge — especially Days 8, 9, and 10, where we explore listening...

Beginning the Week With Empathy in Motion

Reflection: The Quiet Skill That Shapes Safe, Sustainable Nursing

Last week I had time to work alongside nursing students as they unpacked their placement experiences — the moments that stretched them, surprised them, unsettled them, and taught them something new about who they are becoming as future nurses. The reason I do this is...

Holding Steady When the World Feels Heavy

It feels like the world is carrying a lot right now. The ripple effects of conflict, war, displacement, and political tension are reaching into our homes, workplaces, and conversations. Even if we’re not directly affected, we feel the emotional aftershocks — the...

Easter Is Approaching: A Gentle Invitation to Pause?
